ALNHAM

"ALNHAM is a small village, near the source of the Aln river, 9 miles NNW. of Rothbury, and 13 miles W. of Alnwick. This small parish is bounded on the east by Whittingham, on the south by Allenton, on the west by Kidland, and on the north by Ingram. It is sometimes called Yarwell, and was formerly a place of consequence. The Church is dedicated to St Michael .... Alnham has evidently been an important place in the time of the ancient Britons and Romans. A little to the south is Black Chester, which was occupied by the Romans; and on a hill, a mile west of Alnham, is a semi-circular encampment, defended by two outward rampires and a deep fosse, with an inner circle of uncemented stones. The interior area is 100 yards in diameter, and shows many vestiges of buildings" [From History, Directory, and Gazetteer of the counties of Durham and Northumberland, Parson and White, 1828]

• Alnham, St Michael and All Angels: Records of baptisms 1688-1992, marriages 1705-1973 and burials 1727-1993 are available at Northumberland Collections Service. Bishops' Transcripts for the period 1813-1878 are deposited at Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections, Palace Green, Durham City. The International Genealogical Index (I.G.I.) includes baptisms 1688-1812 and marriages 1705-1812, and Boyd's Marriage Index includes marriages 1705-1812 and banns 1751-1800. Transcripts of baptisms 1688-1812, marriages 1705-1812 and burials 1727-1812 are available in the Local Studies Departments of Newcastle Central Library and Gateshead Central Library. A transcript of monumental inscriptions at Alnham (microfiche TN71) is published by Northumberland and Durham Family History Society and these records are also available in book form at Newcastle Central Library, Local Studies Department.

• This area is now within Northumberland North 2nd Registration District. Certificates of birth, death and marriage can be obtained from: Superintendent Registrar, Register Office, 6 Market Place, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 1HP. If ordering certificates from a District Office, please note the following:
  
  
  1. The cost of a certificate is currently (from 1st April 2003) £ 7.00 - send a Sterling cheque payable to the Superintendent Registrar plus return postage or two International Reply Coupons;
  2. The G.R.O. (St Catherine's) Index references are of no value;
  3. For marriage certificates, the precise place of marriage must be given;
  4. Civil Registration in England and Wales began on July 1st 1837.

Poorhouses, Poor Law, etc.

• Alnham Parish was part of Rothbury Poor Law Union. The Union Workhouse was located in the town of Rothbury. Some records are held at Northumberland Collections Service, but these are of limited genealogical value.
