"SLALEY, a parish in the E. division of Tynedale ward, county Northumberland,
5½ miles S. of Hexham railway station and its post town. It is a straggling
village situated on the Devil's Water rivulet. A portion of the inhabitants
are employed in the Dukesfield lead works. The soil is productive. The
living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Durham, value £103. The
church, built in 1832, has a tower containing two bells. The parochial
charities produce about £14 per annum, £3 of which goes to the school. H.
Silvertop, Esq., is lord of the manor."
