The Local Studies Library, which is located in the Central Library, was established in 1844 and houses the largest collection of local material in the North-East of England. The collection covers Northumberland and Durham, with special emphasis on Newcastle.
The Library's introductory leaflet Tracing Your Ancestors in North East England summarizes its genealogy-related holdings, and provides the addresses and opening hours of other local archives, etc. Other leaflets describe the Library's collections of parish register transcripts, monumental inscriptions, local newspapers, maps and electoral registers.
Leaflets on local history summarize the history of Newcastle upon Tyne, give a background reading list on the subject, describe the history of the Town Moor Hoppings, list North East Firsts, and discuss the origin of the term "Geordie"!
The Library is open Monday and Thursday 9.30am - 8.00pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9.30am - 5.00pm; and Saturday 9.00am - 5.00pm.
