Holywell is a township and colliery village about 1½ miles north [of Earsdon]. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel here, and a new parish hall was erected in 1896, at the sole cost of R.G. Mortimer esq. East Holywell Institute, erected in 1892, consists of lending library, reading and billiard rooms. Earl Percy P.C. is lord of the manor and principle land owner. The area is 1,376 acres; rateable value £9,123; the population in 1891 was 2,782.
