CORNHILL

"CORNHILL is a chapelry, township and village, the property of Sir F. Blake, Bart., and others. The township contains an area of 4,746 acres, and its population in 1801, was 668; in 1811, 725; in 1821, 863; in 1831, 765; in 1841, 823; and in 1851, 973 souls. History is almost silent with regard to the former possessors of this manors. The Greys were the proprietors at the commencement of the reign of Edward I., and we also find that the Swinhowes and Herons held lands here. THE VILLAGE of Cornhill is pleasantly situated ten miles north-west of Wooler, and one mile and a half east by south of Coldstream. THE CHURCH, OR CHAPEL, dedicated to St. Helen, is a neat edifice, and enjoys all the privileges of a parish church." [From History, Topography, and Directory of Northumberland, Whellan, 1855].

Church of England Records.

• Cornhill, St Helen: Records of baptisms 1701-1902, marriages 1697-1993 and burials 1695-1993 are available at Northumberland Collections Service. Bishops' Transcripts for the period 1760-1879 are deposited at Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections, Palace Green, Durham City. Cornhill is not included in the IGI or in Boyd's Marriage Index. Transcripts of baptisms 1701-1812, marriages 1697-1812 and burials 1696-1811 for Cornhill are available at Newcastle Central Library, Local Studies Dept. A transcript of monumental inscriptions at Cornhill (microfiche TN74) is published by Northumberland and Durham Family History Society and these records are also available in book form at Newcastle Central Library, Local Studies Department.

Civil Registration

• This area is now within Northumberland North 1st Registration District. Certificates of birth, death and marriage can be obtained from: Superintendent Registrar, Register Office, Berwick Community Centre, 5 Palace Street East, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1HT. If ordering certificates from a District Office, please note the following:
  
  
  1. The cost of a certificate is currently (from 1st April 2003) £ 7.00 - send a Sterling cheque payable to the Superintendent Registrar plus return postage or two International Reply Coupons;
  2. The G.R.O. (St Catherine's) Index references are of no value;
  3. For marriage certificates, the precise place of marriage must be given;
  4. Civil Registration in England and Wales began on July 1st 1837.

• Cornhill Parish was part of Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union. The Union Workhouse was located in Castlegate, Berwick-upon-Tweed. Some useful records are held at Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office.
